Software Every PC Technician Needs

This post will discuss software that I have found essential as a PC technician. This article is not intended as a step-by-step guide nor is it intended as a list of every app that technicians will ever need. It is simply an overview of software that I find fundamental to the PC technician.

Malware Removal

We already discussed my process for Malware Removal in a previous post. Here's a recap of the software that I use:

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware is one of the best malicious software removal tools available.

SUPERAntiSpyware is another excellent malicious software removal tool. Plus, it comes in a portable version.

ComboFix is great at root kit removal.

While CCleaner is not a malware removal tool, it is great at cleaning up junk before purging a system of malicious software. It also has an excellent portable version.

Live CDs

One of my favorite tools is Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. It is a boot CD based on Bart PE. The entire list of tools included with UBCD4Win is far too long to go into here. But, it includes anti-virus, backup, diagnostic, recovery, password, registry, and benchmarking tools. It is well worth your time to build a CD(or USB drive).

Another Live CD to add to your collection is Ubuntu. This user friendly Linux distribution includes a long list of tools as well. Plus, you can install additional software as needed.

Remote Software

I have found three way of supporting users remotely that I like.

First is Remote Assistant. It is built into Windows and works great. Also good are LogMeIn and DameWare. Try them out and see what works for you.

Misc.

When users have their email applications remember their password for them, they often forget the password when the time comes to migrate to new hardware. Mail Pass View solves this. It can recover lost passwords for many different email apps.

Another thing that users can forget or misplace is product keys. ProduKey has this covered. It can recover product keys for both Windows and Office.

No matter how hard Microsoft tries, Windows XP just won't die. Technicians still spend a lot of time supporting it. I have found that nLite is essential for keeping my XP install CDs up-to-date with the latest Service Packs and patches. Not only that, you can customize the install disk in innumerable ways. It does take a while to download all the updates and set up the CD. But, in the long run, it saves countless hours of downloading updates for each individPC that you service.

A great companion to nLite is DriverPacks. With DriverPacks you can slipstream drivers for practically every hardware device under the sun. You can also create a stand alone disk for updating drivers.

Best for last...

Google. Okay, not really software, but it is vital for every PC technician. It is impossible to know or remember everything about all of the different versions of Windows, much less every application that one may encounter. I use Google all the time to research everything from error messages to how to install a low voltage power supply on a particular HP Laserjet model. Again, Google is indispensable.

Do you have any favorites that are not listed? Let's hear about them. Leave a comment.

  1. These are tools that needed by help desk support agents to perform computer support efficiently and quickly. Without these, providing support would have been much more difficult

  14. Has anyone got an idea that can cause this?

I use Cubase, a DAW, and I had terrible latency problems with my CPU hungry synths when I upgraded to W10, although this did not happen with my old W7 PC. As I only had a few days before the W10 free upgrade expired I quickly put W8 on another hard drive and upgraded it to W10 and then put all my SW on it and there was no latency issues with it. I assumed I had put too much software on my first SSD and that was slowing it down.

I was then able to flip between the two drives and one had terrible latency and the other one was okay, so I thought the SSD drive was faulty, but in the end I cloned my good drive over to my bad drive and my then bad drive became okay too, so it has nothing to do with my hardware.

I left it like that until I put a M.2 drive in my PC recently but W10 could not load from the drive until I scrubbed W10 off my other SSD drives. So I stupidly scrubbed the drives, but when I set up my new M.2 drive I had severe latency problems again.

So I used a Acronis True Image to restore an old back-up I had made of my good SSD drive to one of my SSD's and it worked great until W10 came along and did an update and then it undid everything and changed my PC back to how it was a few days earlier when I had just installed W10 and had hardly any software on it. So W10 has removed about 300GB of data which is going to take me hours to put back on and the latency problem has come back.

What is causing this terrible latency? My buffer sample rates are set right in Cubase. My PC has become difficult to use with my more demanding synths. I use a Steinberg's UR44 soundcard. I'm completely baffled about how this fault can occur. MS chat couldn't help me much.

  15. Malwarebytes is awesome. I got infected with MtSearchDial.com twice. I had a newly installed Windows 8 and I went online to get some of my free software that I had before. I hadn't downloaded the free software for about three years. I Norton installed. I wet to download.com and downloaded something I used to have (I forget what it was) and when it had finished my screen looked different and there was Icons for games and links to casino sites, etc. I found out MySearch.Dial.com had hijacked my browser. Nothing could remove it, I tried everything, System Restores did not work. In the end I downloaded SuperAntyspyware and it worked a bit, but I still had traces of MySearchDial.com, so I downloaded Malwarebytes and within a jiffy MySearchDial was completely removed. I was very impressed. So now I pay for a yearly subscription. I got the price cheap, maybe I got in before they became very popular, and they have kept it cheap ever since.

The second time I got infected I downloaded some free software and I was very careful during the installation and I watched the boxes and unticked MySearchDial.com but it still installed it anyway, so now I don't download anything from these download sites anymore. I just go without. Some very good companies offer free lite versions of their software but when you click to download it they just take you to a site like Downloadload.com. But I won't download it.

  16. Adobe develops an extensive set of applications designed for professionals to use. But beginner computer users can also do a lot of things with these programs once they are familiar with the interface. Adobe Photoshop, for instance, is the most popular out of the professional Adobe applications because the technologies make it a lot easier to edit photos. coreldraw 2017 download full
